Start with conditions, not a product
Roof runoff, site grading, hydrostatic pressure against the wall, cracked mortar joints, and stubborn interior humidity often look alike on the surface, yet each traces back to a different repair in a Birmingham basement.
Build a complete scope
- Which wall the water enters through, and from which side of the slope
- Whether it arrives as hydrostatic pressure or as surface runoff from uphill
- What is corrected outside the wall, not only what is installed inside it
- Whether the wall is poured, block, or the older unreinforced masonry
- Finish restoration, sump discharge routing, and what voids the warranty
Birmingham context
Birmingham has more below-grade space than most of the South, and the reason is topography: as the postwar suburbs climbed the ridges along U.S. 31 and U.S. 280, houses were built into slopes, which produces daylight and walk-out basements rather than the slab construction typical elsewhere in Alabama. That is also what makes them leak. A basement cut into a hillside has soil bearing against one or more walls to nearly full height, and Alabama's clay-heavy Piedmont soil holds water rather than draining it, so after heavy rain the wall carries hydrostatic pressure it was never intended to resist -- and water finds the joint between wall and floor, or a form-tie penetration, rather than an obvious crack. The mill-village and in-town housing is a different problem entirely, with stone or unreinforced block walls that seep through the masonry itself. What happens outside the wall usually decides what happens inside it.
