Building on Red Mountain and Shades Mountain Slopes
Developer Robert Jemison Jr. began laying out Mountain Brook in 1929 along the ridgelines of Red Mountain and Shades Mountain, with landscape architect Warren H. Manning designing winding roads and large lots around three village centers; the city incorporated in 1942. Building estate lots into a mountainside meant every foundation was set into a slope from the start.
