Bessemer's Foundations on Birmingham District Clay
Henry F. DeBardeleben founded Bessemer in 1886 on land he bought for a planned iron-and-coal town, and it incorporated the next year, 1887, growing fast enough in its early boom to earn the nickname 'the Marvel City.' Like the rest of the Birmingham District, Bessemer sits over Valley and Ridge shale and limestone weathered into the same iron-rich red clay found across Jefferson County.
Why Bessemer's Older Core Holds Water
Bessemer's Downtown Historic District, listed on the National Register in 1992 with 70 contributing buildings, sits alongside blocks of homes built well before modern foundation-drainage codes existed. Clay soil expands when wet and shrinks when dry, and on a century-old foundation that cycle usually shows up as water finding the same low point in a basement or crawl space year after year until the grading, gutters, and wall itself are addressed together.
